Types of Dementia Disorders

Check out the different types of dementia to know more about each one.

Alzheimer's disease

It is the most common type of dementia in older adults. It happens when abnormal proteins build up in the brain, causing problems with nerve cell connections. Dealing with dementia is not easy, and we can see these changes with a PET scan.

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)

It is uncommon and often happens in people under 60. FTD is named after the parts of the brain it affects. Changes in the frontal lobe cause behavioral symptoms, while changes in the temporal lobe result in difficulties with language and emotions.

Lewy Body Dementia (LBD)

It brings issues with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood. People with LBD have unusual deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain, known as Lewy bodies.

Vascular Dementia

It is diagnosed in people with changes in their brain's blood vessels. Such is often due to a stroke or injury to small vessels that carry blood to the brain. These changes can be observed using an MRI.

How Do We Diagnose Dementia?

To diagnose the beginning signs of dementia, we first find out whether the patient has a treatable condition that may be similar to the cognitive changes. Moreover, we take a physical exam of the dementia patients to check out their blood pressure and other relevant issues according to the dementia.

Neurological Tests

These tests are used to check how well you think and move. We look at memory, problem-solving, language, and math skills. We also assess balance, how you respond to things you feel, and your reflexes.

Brain Scans

These tests can spot issues like strokes, tumors, and other problems that may lead to dementia. Scans can also reveal changes in how the brain is structured and functions.

  • Computed Tomography (CT): Uses X-rays to create images of the brain and other organs.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Utilizes magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of body structures, such as tissues, organs, bones, and nerves.
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET): Involves radiation to capture images of brain activity, like energy use or specific molecules in various brain regions.
